Athletics Day

Yesterday we had the Junior School Athletics morning. We got to rotate around lots of different activities like chicken throw, hurdles, javelin, egg and spoon and standing long jump. After that we participated in the sprint races. Finally it was time for the class relays. Miss Butel is a little bit competitive and took the race quite seriously and thought very strategically about our running order. But it paid off and we won!!!

Poppies

In Term 2 we planted poppies to remember the soldiers who went to war. They are now flowering and look amazing.

Shake Out

On Thursday we took part in National Shake Out Day. At 9.15 the practice earthquake struck and we all followed the 'drop, cover, hold' procedure. We liked making ourselves into turtles and were really pleased it wasn't real.

We used the experience to imagine what a real earthquake might be like and then wrote some amazing narratives.

THE EARTHQUAKE
By Veronica

One morning I was on the ipads. Suddenly a bash came through the room and the ground started to shake. I was scared. It was an earthquake! I dropped, covered and held. It felt like a rocket flying into Room 8. I did not like it because it felt like I was out of control. When I came out from under the table the pictures were off the wall. I lined up outside. I was happy that the shaking had stopped.

Stardome

On Monday we went to Stardome to learn more about space. We really enjoyed finding out about how the earth orbits the sun and the moon orbits the earth. It was lots of fun acting out how this works and learning about the earth rotating to make day and night. Watching 'The Little Star that Could' in the planetarium was a lot of fun and taught us and Miss Butel a lot of interesting facts about our solar system.

It was a very successful morning for Rm 8 with Cole, Bruno and Daniel winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Yr 1 boys race. Well done to Chloe, Lia, Scott and Will who all finished in the top 10 in their races.

Length

This week in maths we have been exploring length and discussing how tall or short things are. Today we used a variety of different units to measure each other. Some of us used hands, some used books and others used straws or pencils. We came up with loads of different measurements and lengths but Miss Butel posed a problem that got us thinking. If we use our hands to measure things, will everyone always get the same answer???

Matariki

This week we celebrated the start of Matariki (Maori New Year). We made lanterns out of tin cans to represent the seven stars - Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Tupuanuku, Tupuarangi, Ururangi, Potiki. We all tried really hard to hammer in the nails on our own and gave each other lots of support.

Shape

We have been learning about 2D shapes. We have been describing how many sides and corners different shapes have and have written 'guess the shape' riddles. We also made pictures using different shapes. Pop into class and see if you can guess the different shapes.

Life Education

This morning we had our second lesson with Lynn and Harold in the Life Education van. We learnt all about what our tinana (body) needs to stay healthy. We also spoke about how our actions, choices and behaviour can either boost or bug another person. We are all trying very hard to make sure that the actions we take boost another person.
